High
Performance Sculling Program
This program
is primarily intended to reach post-graduate athletes, both men and
women, as well as for those during the summers of their scholastic/collegiate
careers, who wish to become competitive scullers.
The High Performance Sculling Program (HPSP) will be applicable to an
annually selected group of the most competitive and proficient scullers.
OVERVIEW
All athletes interested in the HPSP must become members of CBC and will
be subject to the CBC Constitution and By-Laws.
The HPSP will be comprised of two groups; the Year Round; High Intensity
training group and the Summer; Non-Junior training group.
More details regarding the HPSP can be found in the club’s HPSP plan.
Each athlete who joins the program will be required to be familiar with
the plan.
Program Goals
The goal of the HPSP is to allow for a natural progression for the best
sculling athletes developed by the Crescent Boat Club to advance to
medal winning results at national and international regattas, the FISA
World Championships.
The club, coaches, its representing crews and athletes will pursue;
|
- Olympic medals
- Selection for Olympic and/or World Champioonship teams by winning
the United States National Team Trials and surpassing the international
time standards
- International regatta victories, such as tthe Henley Royal Regatta
- Victories at events entreated in the USRowwing National Championship
Regatta and the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta
|
Training
Groups
The HPSP will be comprised of two groupings; a Year Round; High Intensity
training group and a Summer; Non-Junior training group. While Crescent
intends to create and sponsor a Year Round; High Intensity training group,
many athletes will most likely initially begin through the Crescent Summer
Non-Junior, as well as Junior, programs. These competitive training groups
are designed to provide scholastic and collegiate athletes with summer
training, a chance to improve their technique, and an opportunity to race
for medals and championships. The hope is that these athletes would remain
at Crescent after graduation to pursue full-time post-collegiate training
with the Crescent Year Round; High Intensity training group of the HPSP.
Year
Round; High Intensity
The Year Round; High Intensity training group will be designed to prepare
athletes to pursue and realize the program’s goals. This program will
identify and train HPSP candidates who will have the potential to continue
this tradition in the future.
Summer; Non-Junior
The Summer; Non-Junior training group runs from June to early August,
and focuses on preparing athletes to win medals at the USRowing National
Championship Regatta. Select athletes from within the program also have
the chance to compete at the Canadian Henley Regatta and United States
National Team Trials. Entries to these and other regattas will be dependent
on the competitiveness of the crew. The HPSP Coach, Club Captain and
the Racing Committee reserve the right to exercise discretion relative
to permitting crews to enter all events.
DETAILS
The following section provides a more detailed view of the HPSP. The
details surrounding the daily operations will be similar for the Year
Round; High Intensity and the Summer; Non-Junior training groups.
Coaching Staff
Javier Murillo , Crescent Head Coach - former coach of Argentinia's
Olympic Crew, and Peru's elite rowing team.
Size
The HPSP athlete pool looks to accommodate a maximum of about 12 highly
motivated scullers. The program composition could foster the development
of scullers in various boatings.
The following table summarizes different boating arrangements during
any practice session;
Daily Schedule
Training is essential to producing a fully prepared sculler for any
and all competitions. The following details the training schedule;
Training Sessions
The annual training plan calls for a total of 12 workouts per week;
two on each day of the week and one workout on each weekend day. The
weekday practice time, of those coached sessions, will occur at 5:30
p.m. Saturday practices will be run at 7 a.m.
During weekdays the plan will encourage athletes to train, unsupervised,
during the mornings and attend evening coached sessions.
The following table summarizes the daily training times;
Equipment
Boats
The program will be able to support both heavyweight and lightweight
classes. In addition, team boats will be emphasized. The program shall
be geared towards the handling of one to three quads and two to four
doubles, and possibly as many as six doubles, at any given time.
Team boats shall be coached during sessions identified above. Athletes
may row singles that are personally owned during unsupervised practices.
In the event that there are an odd number of scullers on a given coached
training session, some may be placed in singles. As a general rule,
those scullers who own their own boats may be assigned to the single
before those who will need to use club equipment.
Sculls
Athletes are encouraged to provide their own sculling oars. Participation
with the HPSP does not require ownership as the club possesses ample
sets of sculling oars for club use.
Costs
The following details the expected expenses relative to the operation
of the HPSP, namely coaching, entry fees, lodging and transportation.
Entry Fees
All entry fees to those regattas mentioned above will be paid by the
club. Fees for any additional regattas that athletes of the HPSP wish
to attend will be covered on a case by case basis. The HPSP Coach, Club
Captain and the Racing Committee reserve the right to exercise discretion
relative to covering entry fees to all regattas.
Lodging
CBC does not provide or arrange for lodging for athletes from out of
town. Room and board for all regattas requiring travel will be the responsibility
of the athlete and the Coach.
Transportation
Transportation to and from regattas will be provided by and the responsibility
of the athlete and the Coach. Transporting equipment to and from regattas
will be provided by CBC. Trailer fees may need to be defrayed by both
athletes and the Coach. Scullers may wish to transport their own equipment.
Prerequisites/Standards
Individuals interested in training in this HPSP will be experienced
rowers committed to full time training. The Year Round; High Intensity
and the Summer; Non-Junior training groups seek athletes for Intermediate,
Senior and Elite competition.
Preferably, candidates for this program will be collegiate, varsity
athletes or recent graduates eligible for Senior B (under 23) competition.
All candidates will have spent 2005 - 2006 in an active rowing training
and racing program.
Initially, the program will accept athletes with a willingness to commit
to adherence to high intensity training. The program will try to accommodate
any athlete who is interested in pursuing the program’s goals. However,
as limited seats become a constraining factor, ergometer testing may
be used as possible screening criteria.
An ergometer time-standard matrix, provided below, may provide some
guidance on the selection and identification of HPSP candidates and
potentially as initial criteria for creating team boat lineups for training
sessions and regatta event entries;

waiver should be signed and put on file with Schuylkill Navy and USRowing
as this will be required for participation in all regattas.
